Remember to sign up to our Garden Waste Collection Service to ensure your green bin is collected from next month.
Hertsmere Borough Council officially launched the new service in April 2024, but has continued to collect all green bins to give residents time to subscribe. From June 2024 only households signed up and displaying a Garden Waste Collection Service sticker on their green bin will have their garden waste collected.
The first year’s subscription is completely free, this means nobody will pay for a green waste collection before April 2025, which will coincide with our new weekly food waste collections.
Cllr Paul Richards, Portfolio Holder for Environmental Sustainability and Net Zero and Public Health, said: “Even though our new Garden Waste Collection Service is free for the first year, residents do need to subscribe if they would like to have their green waste collected. At the moment we are continuing to collect all green bins to allow residents time to subscribe, but from June 2024 we will only collect from properties that have signed up and are displaying a Garden Waste Collection Service sticker on their green bin.
“Charges to garden waste collections won't start until April 2025 and coincides with our new weekly food waste collection service. Signing up this year will not automatically commit residents to an ongoing subscription. We will let you know in good time of any charges prior to the new subscription year starting."
The council is able to offer the first year free thanks to early anticipation of the government’s 'Simpler Recycling Plan' and accessing funds, the benefit of which have been passed on to local residents.
The ambitious new plans will provide residents with a cleaner and greener recycling service, which will divert over 3,000 tonnes of waste from landfill each year.
Food waste is the most common contaminant of the council’s dry recycling service and currently accounts for about 27% of waste found in the black bin. Residents can place food waste in their garden waste bin until the introduction of the new food waste collection in 2025.
Cllr Richards added: “We know our residents want to recycle more and make better use of our natural resources, which these changes will help them to achieve.”
